Theobroma cacao L. is the scientific name for the cacao tree. In Greek, theobroma means "food of the gods." Cocoa beans were a product highly valued by the high society of empires as important as the Mayans and Aztecs, who also used the beans as a bargaining chip. The cocoa tree produces large, oval fruits full of a bittersweet pulp that contains between 30 and 50 seeds from which raw cocoa is obtained.
