CONACADO cocoa producers farm around 27,978 hectares of land (447,647tareas). There are small producers because most of them have less than 5 hectares of land (source: Éthiquable).
Sánchez cocoa. The traditional method to produce Sánchez quality cocoa consists of simply drying the cocoa beans after the harvest. This cocoa is used in North American countries to produce cocoa butter.
In order to satisfy the demand of certain clients, CONACADO offers a limited quantity of organically certified Sánchez cocoa. Hispaniola cocoa. At CONACADO we hold the tradition of producing Hispaniola cocoa since the 1980’s. In the Dominican Republic, we are pioneers in manufacturing this type of high quality organic cocoa and rely on our experience and specialization in this type of product to be successful. Hispaniola cocoa undergoes a controlled fermentation process after it is cut. To produce the finest quality of Hispaniola beans, the cocoa fruit is fermented for 5 to 7 days in wooden crates. Afterwards, the beans dry on wooden platforms. A slow and cautious sun drying process can take up to 7 days. Organic cocoa. The majority of Sánchez and Hispaniola cocoa we produce is organically certified. CONACADO’s organic cocoa holds a strong position in the international market and is still the worldwide leader in organic cocoa sales +info. 80 % of its cocoa is certified organic, and 58 % of its producers grow organic cocoa. We are certified under the Council Regulation EEC 2092/91 on organic production of agricultural products since 1994 through the German certificatory BCS Ökogarantie. We also hold the Biosuisse de Suiza certification from Switzerland and since 2002 have been registered with NOP certification in order to export our organic products to the USA. Furthermore, as of 2003, we are also certified under the German Demeter Internacional certification. Biodynamic cocoa. Since mid-2003, CONACADO is the first and only worldwide organization to cultivate biodynamic cocoa, certified by Demeter Internacional. This type of agriculture combines aspects of organic agriculture with those of the anthroposophical school of thought. Founded by philosopher Rudolf Steiner who in 1924 exposed his thoughts on agriculture at a farmers assembly and introduced the leading concepts of what is now known as biodynamic agriculture. +info Our PPP Demeter Project. In order to assume a portion of the considerable investment necessary for the initial phase of biodynamic cultivation, we receive income from a Private Public Partnership. Parts of these funds come from the German GTZ (Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit) and the rest from our clients, due to their great interest in buying the first biodynamic cocoa. We are implementing this project with various associations from Block 2 in Yamasá and Block 8 in Castillo, with a production volume of 400 metric tons per year.
