Our farmers have achieved great improvements in the past years.

Many have freed themselves of debts and built new houses. Nevertheless, some still lack adequate equipment for their cocoa fermentation and drying facilities and their wives are without basic household appliances that would greatly facilitate their daily work.

La situación de mi vida y de mi familia es mucho mejor...
Testimonial of Pedro Santo Gil
2 properties, 5 children, 12 grand children.

“We find ourselves a thousand times better since we joined Block N° 5. I have been a member of Block N° 5 for the past 5 years and my living condition as well as my family's have improved a great deal. Being a member of the Block has a range of very simple advantages: the people are very conscious, not only to pay a better price but they also give us our incentives at the end of the year. Furthermore, they lend us money with great conditions. Before, the large exporters determined the prices and one day, my father had to sell his house to reimburse the loans that he had received. Now, it is very easy to obtain loans and with this money we can, for example, pay laborers that clean the property after the harvest. This is very important for good farm management.!"

Services to small scale products
Benefits

CONACADO was funded in 1988 as a democratic cooperative organization with the purpose of significantly improving the small scale cocoa producers income, and consequently, their living condition as well as their family’s.

We intend to reach our goals by means of organic and sustainable farming of our cocoa crop, and by improving the quality of our product. We also carry out a joint commercialization of harvests and offer the following programs and services:
Joint commercialization. Instead of delivering to exporters, our associated producers deliver their products directly to a CONACADO group.

Somos el segundo país más pobre del Caribe. Nuestros productores reciben un mejor precio. El ingreso depende del precio mundial del cacao.
Not everything in our country is as sweet as chocolate. The Dominican Republic is the second poorest country in the Caribbean. Recent numbers indicate that 42 % of the population lives under the poverty line (UNDP 2004), and 16% under extreme poverty.

A global cocoa market… The small-scale cocoa producer's income depends on the price of cocoa on the New York and London stock markets; and as it fluctuates, so does their family's financial stability.
